Saint Monica

The mother of St. Augustine. We celebrate her feast today.

The beautiful image above comes from St. Monica's Church, in the Diocese of Trenton, from a study of the saint done by John Nava, who crafted the stunning tapestries of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles.

From the Liturgy of the Hours:
God of mercy,
comfort of those in sorrow,
the tears of Saint Monica moved you
to convert her son Saint Augustine to the faith of Christ.
By their prayers, help us to turn from our sins
and to find your loving forgiveness.
Grand this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

John Nava's tapestries in LA's cathedral are its best feature, indeed. It's moving to see such photorealistic depiction of the saints along side those called to be saints -- us! A true communion of saints.

Took a tour of the Cathedral in 2006...the tapestries literally took my breath away. I love the whole of the L.A Cathedral, though not everyone feels the same...

When I first saw those tapestries, I was moved to tears. The way they are positined, hands clasped, facing the altar, as if going to communion -- yes, it gives the idea of "communion of saints" a whole new dimension! And these are faces we all recognize, plucked from the ordinary men and women Nava saw around LA.

They are us --and we could be them.
