If you choose to leave a comment, the ground rules are simple: no slander, profanity, racism, sexism or name-calling. Violators will be deleted. I reserve the right to moderate comments, if necessary, or even shut them down. The guiding principle should be: WWJB? "What Would Jesus Blog?"I don't mind debate or disagreement, as long as it's civil and respectful.
It's a big church. In the immortal words of James Joyce, describing the Catholic Church: "Here comes everybody." There are a lot of differing opinions out there. I want to try and make room for them all.
I do my best to keep up with comments but, as you can imagine, I do have other distractions (like, say, my job) that keep me from monitoring The Bench 24/7. I'm also trying to avoid resorting to comment moderation, because that causes other headaches and tends to discourage discussion and slow things down.
Recently, someone left a comment saying: "You have a very cute and attractive progressive Catholic site, but not a great deal of substance. Rather like a pleasant modern suburban Catholic church that just wants folks to like it there with maybe a snide remark thrown out at nasty old conservative troglodytes." I had to laugh. Whether or not this place has any substance, I leave up to the readers. But "progressive" is in the eye of the beholder. I number among my heroes bishops like Chaput and O'Malley; I appreciate people who kneel for communion and receive on the tongue; my favorite hymns include "Panis Angelicus" and "You Are Near", and I also have deep love for "Tantum Ergo" and "I Am The Bread of Life,"; nothing puts me over the moon like a lot of incense and a little Latin; I love folk masses, with the right music; I've attended masses with liturgical dancing that have left me deeply and profoundly moved; nothing raises goosebumps in me more than when I celebrate Benediction and hear the opening chords of "O Salutaris Hostia"; and nothing disappoints me more than touchy-feely meandering and bloodless homilies that say absolutely nothing.
As I said, it's a big church. I love it all and see abundant riches everywhere.
Anyway...
Thank you all for understanding. And, of course, thank you for visiting, reading, sharing, venting and supporting this little enterprise with your thoughts, ideas, presence and prayers.

Deacon Greg, I couldn't have put it better myself. Mother Church loves and has a place for ALL her children! Now, if only the children can get along.
I appreciate your blog, Deacon Kandra. I turn to it often. God bless you and all of us.
Thank you for being just as you are. And for this blog! There is room at the table for all of us.
I echo Gabriel's comment. I have very much enjoyed your take on all sorts of issues - from your list of likes and dislikes, you sound very much like me :) (Although I'm still not convinced of the value of liturgial dancing ;) )
I enjoy your blog...keep up the good work!
Esp., enjoy reading your sermons, such as the one on the Chinese martyrs.
Ad multos annos!
As a new deacon I am grateful for the blog - so many thoughts and ideas to ponder. I really look forward to its daily postings and find them very helpful. I also very much appreciate the posting of your homilies. You are a plain language writer which is my style as well. This past Saturday I was really struggling to come up with a strong ending for my own homily and yours gave me the perfect idea on how to end on a strong note. Thanks Greg. Keep up the good work. Blessings for your week.
Upon reading all of your "likes & dislikes" i.e. hymns etc. all I have to say is Deacon Greg....."you be my kinda man".
Thanks for your blog & service.
God Bless
Dcn. Greg,
My advice is to keep doing what you're doing, because you are an inspiration to many... Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether they are right or sometimes wrong and too quick to make a judgement...
Regardless, as long as we're all growing together in God's love and we're not afraid of putting out into the deep, then we have nothing to fear but fear itself...
Peace...
I think it is a certainly unfair characterization to call you "progressive." Your blog has always displayed to me the voice of moderation, always consonant with Catholic moral teaching. As for substance, out of the number of Catholic blogs out there, yours is certainly my favorite. Of course, I am an aspiring deacon, so perhaps, as we say in the South, "I'm a little partial." :)
I stop in often, because of the sense of the old Hebrew word "Shalom" that radiates through the pages. The very welcome feeling that our beloved Deacon gives to us, allowing us to put our feet on the table and have beverages on the new sofa, etc. It is such a blessing to have a wonderful forum as this and its a great place to get in touch with the gaps and bridges between other Catholics, to get a sense how the others view our faith.
That coupled with the thoughts provoked by the interesting clips and snipets that Deacon Greg provides, offers one the opportunity of "Selah", to pause and consider. How very necessary it is for us to pause and consider the many facets of our faith. And also the many people that share that same faith.
Bless you Deacon Greg for a wonderful forum that us know-nothings can enjoy and contribute our small voices to the world! Pax Vobiscvm
